FAQS

Answers to our most asked questions below

Remote notarization permits a notary to perform notarial acts over the internet utilizing a two-way audio-visual video link. The act is recorded and stored in an online notary journal and maintained for a minimum of ten years.

Remote notarization allows any person or business to have their documents legally notarized from the comfort of their own home or office.

Currently, only notaries who are commissioned in states that have authorized remote notarizations are authorized to perform notarial acts over the internet. However, most states will honor a notarial act performed in another state so long as the act is performed by a commissioned notary who performs the act in compliance with that state’s laws. For example, California law provides, “Any certificate of acknowledgement taken in another place shall be sufficient in this state if it is taken in accordance with the laws of the place where the acknowledgement is made.” Ca. Civ. Code §1189(b). What this means is that one of our Texas notaries can notarize your document for use in California. However, you should contact the agency to whom you intend to send your document and verify that they will accept an online notarization.

Our notaries will notarize your document for use in any state that permits the use of remotely notarized documents.

Currently, remote notarization is authorized in over 29 states, including: Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. That means that only notarizes commissioned in those states may perform online notarizations.

For more clarity on this issue, you should contact the agency to whom you intend to send your document and verify that they will accept an online notarization.

The Notaries on Demand process starts after you create an account on the website. First, you will upload the document to be notarized. One of our notaries will review the document to ensure that it can be notarized. The notary will accept the document, which will send an email back to alert you. You will then be directed to the online payment portal.

After receiving payment, Notaries on Demand will need to ensure that the signer is who they claim to be. Each signer is required to pass a two-stage identity verification system which includes an identity proofing stage and a credential analysis stage.

During the identity proofing stage, you will be asked a series of questions using knowledge-based authentication analysis technology (KBA). You will be required to answer a minimum of five questions in 2 minutes. You must correctly answer a minimum of 80% of the questions correctly to move on to the next stage. You may attempt this stage two times in a 24-hour period.

If you successfully complete the identity proofing stage, you will move on to the credential analysis stage. Here you will be asked to snap a photo of your government issued identification (driver’s license, state issued ID, etc.). You will then be prompted to take a selfie. A forensic screening of your government issued ID will compare your selfie with the picture on your ID. One of our notaries will receive the results of the credential analysis and will determine if you are who you claim to be.

Once your identification is verified, the online notary will work with you to schedule the notary session, wherein you will have a video conference and finish the process.

It is extremely important that you do not sign your document until the notary tells you to do so. Our notaries cannot acknowledge your signature unless you complete it in their presence. If you load a document that you have already signed, you will be required to start the process over again.

Remote electronic notarization (or online notarization) enables you to “personally appear” appear before a commissioned notary public from the comfort of your own home or office. However, for an online notarization to be valid, you must appear before a commissioned notary who has also been commissioned as an online notary. All Notaries on Demand notaries carry the required commissions, ensuring your document is notarized in compliance with the laws of the state in which our notaries have received their commission.

All Notaries on Demand notaries are required to maintain current commissions, both as a traditional notary public and an online notary.
